Betsy Corcoran, Cofounder, CEO & Chair, EdSurge
Before starting EdSurge, Betsy served as Executive Editor for technology at Forbes Media, a staff writer at The Washington Post and a member of the Board of Editors of Scientific American. She advises several charter schools, has served as Trustee of her local library and was named “parent of the year” at the local elementary school. Her two sons have been educated at public schools. (Go, Panthers!) Her husband is writing a book on the future for liberal arts graduates. She has degrees from Newtown High School, Georgetown University and was a fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Jennifer Carolan, General Partner/Cofounder, Reach Capital
Jennifer began her career in teaching and soon became interested in differentiated learning and teaching tools. After studying at the Stanford School of Education, where she also taught, Jennifer joined NewSchools in 2006 and co-founded the Seed Fund in 2011. She has led more than 50 investments and sits on the boards of six edtech companies (EdSurge, Nearpod, Education Elements, FreshGrade & WriteLab). Jennifer developed a math camp for her kids and their friends, scuba dives with her daughter, and learns piano with her sons.
Matt Hanson, GSV Capital
Matt is a New York-based partner with GSV Asset Management, where he has led the firm’s investments in General Assembly, 2U, Knewton, Course Hero, and Fullbridge, among others. He was previously Head of Corporate Finance for ThinkEquity Partners, where he served on the firm’s Investment Commitment Committee and raised $2.5 billion across 30 transactions. Prior to that, Matt was an investment banker at Banc of America Securities, where he was involved with over $5 billion of M&A, equity, and debt transactions. Matt began his career as a financial analyst with Goldman, Sachs & Co. He graduated from the University of Chicago with general honors and is a CFA charterholder.
Tory Patterson, Catamount Ventures
Tory Patterson is the CoFounder and Managing Partner of Owl Ventures and a partner with Catamount Ventures, a San Francisco-based venture capital fund focused on mission-driven companies. He serves on the boards of six edtech companies. Tory founded and ran Catamount’s education investment practice, where he led investments in leading education companies MasteryConnect, PresenceLearning, EdSurge, TenMarks (acquired by Amazon) Upworthy and Declara. Tory earned a BA from Williams College and an MBA from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.
Tyler McNally, President, EdSurge
Tyler works at the intersection of business development and operations at EdSurge to design/implement strategies, products and processes that enable EdSurge to grow. Prior to joining EdSurge, he led operations and business development at IXL Center, which supports business incubation and delivers exec-ed programs to large corporations. He has also led innovation and economic competitiveness projects in the US and across the Middle East for Monitor Group, a global strategy consulting firm. Tyler graduated from Stanford’s MBA/MA Education program and from the Honors Program at Boston College with a BA in economics.
